フィリピン大学～バギオ校～
■バギオはフィリピンの首都マニラがあるルソン島北部に位置する、コルディジェラ行政地域の中心都市です。バギオの面積は49km2、人口は345,366人（2015年）となっております。
標高1500mの高地にあることから年中冷涼な気候で、以前は3月から5月にかけて大統領府などの政府機関が移転していたこともあります。
■フィリピンでは珍しく一年を通して平均最高気温が26℃を超えることはなく絶好の避暑地となっています。山岳地帯にあるため雨季の雨はとても多く、7月から9月はほぼ毎日雨が降ります。
■また1900年代のアメリカ軍主体で行われたバギオ開発の時には、現地に移住していた日本人が道路開発などに大きく貢献したなど、歴史的に日本との結びつきも強く、日系フィリピン人も多く存在していました。現在でも北ルソン日本人会という日本人コミュニティがバギオにあります。

■バギオはフィリピン有数の学園都市としても知られており、フィリピン大学、バギオ大学、セントルイス大学、コルディエラ大学といった 6 つの総合大学があり、フィリピン士官学校 （PMA） など20 校程の各種大学があり、優秀な学生が多く集まり、人材を排出しているため、経済発展にも大きく寄与し、一方で学園都市のため娯楽産業は抑制されており、また避暑地という側面から富裕層が多く、治安面でも他都市に比べ安全です。
■バギオは丘陵地にあり、美しい山々に囲まれていることからアウトドアスポーツが盛んで、またキャンプジョンヘイ、フィリピンミリタリーアカデミー、マインズビュー、大統領が滞在中に公務を行うマンションハウスなど、歴史や文化、自然と豊かに触れ合えるスポットが多くあり、郊外にも有名な観光スポットが点在しています。
■近郊のトリニダッドではイチゴ狩りが体験できますし、バスで 2 時間程で海水浴やサーフィンが楽しめるサンフェルナンドに行くこともできます。洞窟探検で有名なサガダ、世界遺産にも登録されているヴィガンの街並みといった有名観光地が多くあります。
■生活面でも、バギオはマニラやセブなどに比べると街は小さいですが、SM モールなどの大きなショッピングモールもあり、日本人が多く暮らすことから日本のものも手に入りやすく、生活に必要なものは大抵揃える事ができます。
■バギオは語学留学地として、フィリピンで最初に語学学校が誕生した街で、多くの語学学校があり、セブに次いで 2 番目に語学留学生が多い街となっています。その理由は 1 年を通して過ごしやすい気候と、優秀な講師が採用出来、過去の積み重ねで教育水準が高い環境、そしてセブなどに比べ 2 割程度安い物価、また誘惑が少なく勉強に集中できる環境と、バギオはフィリピンで一番語学留学に適した環境が整っているといえます。

■What does University of the Philippines - Baguio (UP Baguio) stand for?
University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio was established in 1961. It is the 7th autonomous unit of the University of the Philippines System and has been known as the UP in the North.It offers undergraduate programs through its three colleges: College of Arts and Communication, College of Science, and the College of Social Sciences. It also offers Master's degrees in Language and Literature, Mathematics, Social Development Studies, and Management. The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) has recognized UP Baguio as a Center of Development in Mathemetics.UP Baguio prides itself on being a green campus as it is committed to the preservation and the planting of various kinds of trees and plants within and around the campus. It currently has projects in creating a mini-agroforestry farm and narra plantation around the UP Baguio Residence Hall; a medicinal herb Garden inside the campus; and an arboretum of native trees at a 4-hectare property owned by UP Baguio at Itogon, Benguet.
